Outdoor sessions in Western Queensland are beautiful, but they do ask a bit from everyone. The weather can turn quickly out here. Heat, wind, dust and changing light are all part of the deal. A little planning makes the session much easier.
Plan around the light
Early morning and late afternoon are usually the best times to shoot. The light is softer, the temperature is kinder, and people are far more comfortable. Midday sun can be rough. It brings hard shadows, bright glare and plenty of squinting.
Dress for the conditions
Choose clothes that breathe and move easily. Light, simple outfits tend to work best in the heat. Bring water, especially for family or maternity sessions. If little kids are coming, pack snacks, wipes and a spare top. Nobody enjoys photos when everyone is hot and cross.
Wind is common, so expect a bit of movement. Hair will shift. Dresses may lift. Dust can get on shoes and hems, especially near paddocks or dry tracks. Practical shoes help for walking between spots, and you can always change later.
Light can change fast once the sun starts dropping. Sometimes a small step to the side, a turn of the shoulders, or a different patch of shade makes all the difference. The main thing is to stay flexible. Out here, the conditions are part of the landscape, not something to fight.
