I work in a region where distances are measured in hours, not minutes. A drive from Winton to Mt Isa takes most of the day. Getting from Longreach to Barcaldine is no quick trip. In Central West Queensland, you can easily lose a morning to a road that is far off the bitumen.
I have learned that people sometimes forget their sessions. Life gets in the way. Work calls. Family needs help. The daily grind of country life is real. When that happens, you might wonder what I actually do.
First, I do not panic. I check my phone. I send a quick message asking if you are on your way. Sometimes the phone battery dies. Sometimes the signal drops out completely in the Outback. That is just part of the territory.
If I do not hear back after an hour, I make a call. I am not calling to blame anyone. I am calling to make sure you are safe. Remote locations mean unexpected things can happen. A flat tyre. A sudden outback storm. A family emergency. These are real risks when photographing anywhere in Outback Queensland.
Here are two practical tips to help you avoid this stress:
Tip one: Send me a text the night before your session. Just a simple message like “See you at 7 am” helps us both remember. It confirms you are still on track.
Tip two: If you are heading to a remote spot, check your phone signal and battery life. Bring a portable charger. A dead phone is more than an inconvenience here. It can mean being stuck with no way to communicate.
When you arrive late, we do not rush. We find what light we have left. Sometimes that means adjusting your outfit for better sunlight. Sometimes it means shifting the time of day entirely. The goal is not perfection. It is capturing you as you are.
I have worked with families in Aramac and done maternity sessions in Mt Isa during wind that almost knocked over my camera gear. Each challenge teaches us about preparation and flexibility.
The best sessions happen when we are on the same page. That starts before the camera even comes out. Communication, preparation, and understanding that Outback life moves differently than city life is key. If you do forget something, I would rather you call me than worry about being late. We will make it work.
