Feeling Awkward in Front of the Camera? You’re Not Alone.

I get asked this question all the time. “Will I look weird?” “I hate being photographed.” “I don’t know what to do with my hands.”

Whether we are doing a wedding in Winton, a maternity shoot in Aramac, or a newborn session in Longreach, I hear it. That feeling is real. It is normal. And there are ways to work through it.

You are not a professional model

I never expect my clients to pose like they are on a magazine cover. The best photos I take are usually the ones where people stop thinking about the camera and start thinking about what is happening around them.

At a wedding, focus on your partner. At an engagement shoot, lean into the conversation you are having. With newborns and maternity, you are not there for you; you are there for each other. When I direct a session, I tell people to look at each other, not at me. The camera captures what is real between people. If you look at me, you get a stiff portrait. If you look at each other, you get a memory.

Move instead of freeze

One of the best ways to shake off awkwardness is movement. Standing perfectly still makes you hyper-aware of every angle. Instead, I like to ask couples to walk slowly together. Tell them to whisper something to one another. Have them dance a slow song during a session.

With newborn photos, I keep the setup simple. The baby isn’t posing. The parents are just holding and talking to them. I work around their rhythm, not the other way around.

Trust the process

I have been photographing in Central West Queensland long enough to know how awkward the first few minutes feel. Most people soften up once we start moving through the session. They stop overthinking and start living the moment.

If you are feeling stiff, tell me. I can change the direction. I can make jokes. I can give you a five-minute break. The goal isn’t perfect poses; it is real moments you will actually want to look back on.

Whether you are in Barcaldine, Aramac, or anywhere else in the Outback, you will look better when you are comfortable. And comfort comes from focusing on the experience, not the camera.

Take a breath. We will work through it together.
