Why photographing in open spaces makes you better

When I first started shooting in Outback Queensland, those vast landscapes felt intimidating. My instinct was to find something to hide behind. A building, a tree, anything that looked contained.

But those wide-open spaces have actually made me a better photographer.

You learn to work with natural light

Open spaces mean direct, unfiltered light. This isn’t always comfortable. But it teaches you to understand sun direction, shadow length, and how to position your subject when there’s nothing blocking the sun.

Tip: The golden hour in the Outback can be dramatic, but the light stays strong longer than you might expect. I’ve learned to use a slightly overcast sky as a natural diffuser rather than waiting for a sunset.

Your composition skills improve

When there’s nothing to hide behind, every element in your frame becomes intentional. You learn that negative space isn’t empty. It’s part of the composition. Your subject becomes the story.

Tip: Look for leading lines that draw the eye. A track, a fence line, even the edge of a shadow can guide someone’s view through the image without you having to clutter the shot.

You become more adaptable

Wind is more than an annoyance when you’re photographing outside. It moves hair, clothes, and even your stability. I’ve learned to anticipate gusts and shoot faster bursts without losing control of the moment.

The variety builds your portfolio

Weddings and events have their own requirements. But photographing in wide-open spaces gives you shots that feel timeless. The light, the terrain, the sense of place. These become your signature.

What I’ve gained from shooting across Central West Queensland in the open is confidence. I don’t fear harsh light or endless sky anymore. I know how to work with it, and that knowledge shows in my photographs.

If you’re thinking about a session in a remote location, don’t worry about the space between your subject and the horizon. Those gaps are where your story lives.
