When to Book Maternity and Newborn Photos in Western Queensland

One of the questions I get asked a lot is when these sessions should actually happen. Timing matters anywhere, but it matters even more in Western Queensland. Distances are bigger, travel takes longer, and babies have no interest in sticking to a schedule.

For maternity photos, I usually suggest aiming for 28 to 34 weeks. For most mums, that is the best window. Your belly is showing well, but you are often still comfortable enough to walk, move, and enjoy the session without feeling completely over it.

If you are expecting twins, have had early babies before, or your care team is keeping a closer eye on things, I would go earlier. Somewhere around 28 to 30 weeks is usually a safer bet. Leaving it too late can mean you are sore, tired, or suddenly told to slow down.

For newborn photos, the usual sweet spot is 5 to 14 days after birth if you want those sleepy, curled up photos. Babies are often more settled in that stage. That said, if you prefer something more relaxed and natural, older newborns photograph beautifully too. The photos just have a different feel. More stretches, more eye contact, and a bit more personality starting to show.

The biggest practical tip I can give is to book your newborn session while you are still pregnant. Not the exact date, because due dates are more of a rough suggestion than a promise. Just get it pencilled in early, then adjust once baby arrives.

That matters even more out here. Rural travel can throw off even the best plan. You might need to travel for birth, stay near the hospital a bit longer, or wait until you are home and settled. Long drives, road conditions, and weather can all shift the timing.

A few things that help:
– Book maternity photos in the second trimester so the date is sorted early.
– Plan newborn photos before birth, then confirm once baby arrives.
– Leave buffer time around travel, especially if you are coming home from hospital or live a fair way out.

A little planning takes a lot of pressure off. It gives you more flexibility and a much better chance of getting the timing right.
